About the ISSA Organisation

History and Aims

  • to preserve shanties and seasongs as a cultural heritage;

  • provide mutual support, cooperation and exchange of information between affiliated member choirs and groups;

  • maintain contacts within the various participating countries. The ISSA achieves these goals in part through organising an annual shanty- festival. These festivals take place in one of our associate countries each year. To achieve “international” status these festivals must meet certain standards.

Founding

The International Shanty & Seasong Association (ISSA) was founded on the 11th. November, 1995 in Delfzijl as successor of the INSSA (International North Sea Shanty Organisation), which was founded in 1989.
